Junto
Join a Junto in Oswego, IL
Several friends and I love having discussions regarding philosophy, political science, natural science, sociology and other similarly meaty topics. We emphatically do not all agree, neither do we come from the same starting points nor share identical (or occasionally even similar) views. We do tend to have a common tendency away from unscientific “new-age” views, and abhor polarized unrealistic politics (far right and far left). If you are afflicted with rampant curiosity, prone to philisophical musings and deeply in love with your community, nation and/or the human race we’d like to add the richness of your mind to our community.
Regarding politics: Collectively we share a passionate patriotism, a respect for fairness and tolerance of disagreement and difference. We (as a group) are not associated with any political party, nor do we wish to develop such an association. We believe that politics is the ultimate means for creating and maintaining a context in which Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness can be guaranteed and facilitated for all citizens. Conversely, we are deeply disgusted with much of what happens and many who serve or seek office in applied (as opposed to theoretical) politics. Each of us tends to value real information over dogma and deliberate consideration over personal subjectivism. Personal assaults and insults are never tolerated. We are and will work actively to remain friends.
Regarding history: We love American history, and especially Revolutionary history. The founding fathers were real and substantive people for whom we feel deep affection and admiration. So far, our universal favorite is Benjamin Franklin, whose Junto is our model. Though not strictly a founder, Lincoln facilitated many profound changes to our national government and character, and is held in inestimable regard as well. The Founder’s examples of courage, insight, selflessness and genius are a living inspiration bolstering our love of them, of country and of our fellow Citizens.
On science: We believe that facts are more persuasive than opinion, and that science is the best mechanism available to humanity for discovering, conveying and debating facts. Additionally, we like science and scientific findings in their own right, aside from specific tie-ins to social policy. Constant progress toward knowledge regarding how the world, people and the universe work is very fun! It’s difficult to apply quantum mechanics and general relativity to social theory, but they remain delightful topics of discussion and inquiry.
On religion: We stay away from religious discussions other than to acknowledge the value of freedom of religion and discussions about governmental disestablishment.
Involvement: People of talent and passion should seek and take opportunities to contribute their abilities to the betterment of their fellow man.
